About Nelson

Nelson is a pocket paradise nestled in the top northwest corner of the South Island.  A place where you will find artists and crafts people, Māori marae, alternative communities and adventures.  Nelson enjoys more sunshine hours than any other region in New Zealand.  Home to 26 wineries and a trail of boutique brewers.  Nelson is the birthplace of rugby in New Zealand and the World of Wearable Art.

Introducing Nelson Group

The Nelson Group of AAPNZ was established in 1991 and represents administrative professionals (personal assistants, executive assistants, office managers, receptionists, secretaries, accounts clerks, and administrators) in the Nelson/Tasman region.  Members in Nelson Group represent a wide range of industries including law firms, education, local government, accounting, engineering, travel, etc.

Administrators in any industry, whether self-employed or working for someone else, will benefit from the ongoing training, upskilling and education that Nelson Group offers.  Nelson Group hosts an annual workshop, monthly group meetings, and monthly social luncheons.  Many of our members state that networking with other administrators is another important benefit to members.  When a member has a question, one of our members will often be able to answer it whether it is a software problem, an educational opportunity or a grammar query.

What are some of the educational opportunities?

Workshops and seminars:  Nelson Group hosts an annual seminar covering topics such as writing, grammar, software and computer topics, and personal and professional development.

To learn more about our next seminar, email Group President, Shelley Hawke at

When and where does Nelson Group meet?

Our meetings alternate between Nelson and Richmond on the third Tuesday or Wednesday of each month from 5.30-6.00pm social/refreshments and 6.00-7.30pm guest speaker or workshop/presentation.  We meet at a variety of venues including Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Tasman District Council (TDC).  We also have on-site meetings at local businesses.

Members are generally charged $7 for monthly group meetings to cover the cost of the meeting, including refreshments, venue and a speaker’s gift.  First-time guests may attend at no cost; additional meetings are $10.  Guests are welcome to attend three group meetings before deciding whether to become a member.

If you are interested in attending a meeting, becoming a member or want more information, please contact:

HEALTH & WELLBEING with Jaron Steffens

Jaron Steffens has been working as a fitness trainer, lifestyle coach, and mental skills coach since 1997. He has a degree and post-graduate diploma in psychology, diplomas in teaching, and child and adolescent psychology.
Jaron currently works as mental skills coach with high achieving adolescents and young adults, and with individuals wanting to overcome barriers to making lifestyle changes.
Jaron believes that every individual is unique in their health needs, and would like to see each person learn what is right for them, rather than trying to promote one size fits all approaches to health.
Outside of work, Jaron is an active individual and is commonly found out mountain biking, water-skiing, or chasing a ball around a hockey field. Jaron played hockey for the New Zealand Masters team in 2016 and 2017, and coaches teams of developing players in Nelson.
